Privacy
SafeStart has no accounts, sets no cookies, and does not want to know who your child is. This page says exactly what does happen, in the order you are most likely to care about.
The short version
You do not sign in, so we do not know who you are. We count page views and nothing else is collected unless you type it into one of two boxes: the question box in Ask SafeStart, or the feedback form. Both of those are described below, and neither needs your child's name.
Your child never visits this site. Nothing here reaches their device, and nothing on their device reaches us. You read the guides on your own phone and change settings on theirs, by hand.
Page views
We count page views using Vercel Web Analytics. It sets no cookies. Instead of storing anything on your device it identifies a visit by a hash of the request, and that hash is discarded within 24 hours, so there is nothing that follows you from one day to the next.
What is recorded is the page, the page that referred you, a rough location no finer than a country or region, and the browser and device type. The script is served from this domain rather than someone else's, so reading SafeStart makes no third-party requests at all. No advertising network, no social pixel, no tag manager.
Your plan page is deliberately left out of this. Its address contains your child's age, their device and the apps they use, and together those describe one specific child. The build refuses to put the counter on that page and a test fails if anyone changes it.
Ask SafeStart
If you ask a follow-up question, your question and the guide you are looking at are sent to Anthropic's API to be answered, and the answer streams back to you. To check that an answer is current it may run a web search. Nothing about the conversation is stored on this site, and there is no account for it to be attached to.
Please do not put your child's name, your address, or anything else identifying into the box. It is not needed to get a useful answer and it is the one way this feature could carry something personal off the page.
The feedback form
If you tell us something is wrong, we receive your message, the page you were on, and your email address if you chose to give one. It is delivered to us as email through Resend. The message is not stored on this site, and an email address you give is used to reply to you and for nothing else. It goes on no list.
The same request applies here: describe what you saw on the screen, not who was using it.
IP addresses
The two routes above are rate limited so that one bored visitor cannot run up a bill. That check holds your IP address in the server's memory for ten minutes to count requests. It is never written to a database, never logged by us, and disappears when the server instance is recycled, which happens constantly. Our host, Vercel, keeps its own operational request logs, as any host does.
What stays on your own device
Your theme choice, your country and age settings, and any plan you have built are saved in your browser's local storage, under names beginning safestart:. That is on your device only. None of it is sent to us and we cannot read it. Clearing your browsing data removes it.
If you install SafeStart as an app, or your browser caches it, copies of the pages are stored on your device so the guides still open with no signal. Those are copies of public pages and contain nothing about you. Uninstalling the app or clearing site data removes them.
What we never do
We do not sell data, and there is no one to sell it to. There are no ads on this site and no advertising or analytics company other than the page counter described above. We do not build a profile of you, we do not track you across other sites, and we send you no marketing.
We do not ask for your child's name, age to the year, school, or location, and you should not give them to us. The age bands exist so a guide can be the right one, and they live in your browser.
Children
SafeStart is written for the adult setting up a device. It is not aimed at children and has no account to create, so there is nothing for a child to sign up to. If you believe a child has sent us something through the feedback form, email us and we will delete it.
Who processes what
Three companies are involved, and only these three. Vercel hosts the site and provides the page counter. Anthropic answers Ask SafeStart questions. Resend delivers feedback messages to us as email. Each is used only for the job named here.
Your rights, and why there is usually nothing to hand over
If you are in the UK or the EU you have the right to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, and to have it deleted. In practice the honest answer to almost every such request is that we hold nothing, because there is no account and the page counter cannot be traced back to a person. The exception is an email you sent us through the feedback form, which sits in our mailbox and can be deleted on request.
Our lawful basis for the page counter is legitimate interests: knowing which guides are read is what tells us which ones to keep current. It is cookieless and cannot identify you. For Ask SafeStart and the feedback form the basis is your request, since nothing is sent until you choose to send it.
Who runs this, and where
SafeStart is run by TrustRaise, the advisory practice of Dave Byrne, at 324 N Payne Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, United States. TrustRaise is the data controller for anything described on this page.
The site is hosted in the United States and the two things you can send us, an Ask SafeStart question and a feedback message, are handled there. If you are reading this from the UK, Ireland or Canada, that means what little there is crosses a border. The page counter is the only thing that happens without you choosing it, and it cannot identify you.
Asking us something, or complaining
Email dave@trust-raise.com, or write to the address above. That email reaches a person rather than a queue.
If you are in the UK and you are not satisfied with how we have handled something, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. In Ireland it is the Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.
If this page changes
The date at the top moves when the policy moves. Anything that changes what is collected rather than how it is worded is also written up in the changelog, alongside the guide corrections, so it is on the record rather than quietly swapped.
