Roblox

A platform of millions of user-made games. The games themselves are made by other users, so quality and content vary enormously.

Menu names shift between software versions and between phone makers. If a name here does not match what you see, look for something close by rather than assuming the setting is gone.

There is a version built for younger children

Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, account types inside Roblox. New in June 2026. Roblox Kids is for 5 to 8 and shows only pre-screened Minimal and Mild experiences, with chat off unless you switch it on from a linked parent account. Roblox Select covers 9 to 15 and goes up to Moderate.

Worth knowing: Which one they get is decided by Roblox's age check or by you verifying yourself as a parent. Control loosens in stages: at 13 they take over their own privacy and chat settings, and at 18 the account unlinks from you automatically.

Worldwide, though Roblox says the exact ages and features vary by region.

What to watch for

Before you start

  1. 1

Check which account they are on

Since June 2026 the account type decides what your child can see and who can reach them, before any setting you change.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child]

    1. Look at the account type shown for your child.
    2. Roblox Kids is for 5 to 8. It shows only pre-screened Minimal and Mild experiences, and chat is off until you switch it on from your linked account.
    3. Roblox Select is for 9 to 15 and goes up to Moderate.
    4. If the type looks wrong for their age, verify yourself as a parent so Roblox can place them properly.

Control loosens in stages, not all at once. At 13 they take over their own privacy and chat settings, and at 18 the account unlinks from you automatically. Roblox says the exact ages and features vary by region.

Who holds this: This lives in your child's own settings, so they can change it back. There is no parent-side lock for it.

    Already done this?

If the birthday on the account is wrong, you can fix it from your linked parent account, but read this first. Roblox allows it once and only once: linked parents can only update a child's birthday once. And it becomes impossible entirely if the child has already verified with a government ID. Correcting it downward moves them into Roblox Kids for 5 to 8 or Select for 9 to 15, and you then have to complete the age check or, in Roblox's words, all communication will be unavailable.

  2. 2

    Get the age check done

Since 2026 this is the gate on everything else. Roblox's own words: users who have not completed an age check cannot chat, whatever their age. It also decides which account type your child lands in, and that decides what they can see.

    Settings → Account Info

    1. Complete the age check for your child, by facial age estimation or ID.
    2. Age check yourself too. A parent needs to be 18 and age checked before parental controls will link.
    3. Check the account type afterwards, and that it matches their real age.

A useful thing almost no guide mentions: if you both age check and add each other as friends, you can become a trusted friend of your own child and chat with them on the platform.

Who holds this: This lives in your child's own settings, so they can change it back. There is no parent-side lock for it.

  3. 3

Link your account and set a Parent PIN

Without a PIN, your child can undo everything you’re about to set in about ten seconds.

Roblox → Settings → Parental Controls

    1. Sign in to your child’s Roblox account on a phone or at roblox.com.
    2. Open Settings, then Parental Controls.
    3. Add your own email as the parent email and verify it from your inbox.
    4. Create a Parent PIN. Choose something your child won’t guess, and not a birthday.

Every setting below now requires your PIN to change.

Who holds this: You set this from your own account, and your child cannot change it back.

  4. 4

    Set Content Maturity

This is the single biggest lever. It filters which games your child can even open.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child] → Settings You Manage → Content restrictions → Content maturity

    1. Open Content restrictions, then Content maturity.
    2. Pick the level for your child’s age from the table.
    3. Confirm with your PIN.
    4. Stay in Content restrictions and open Blocked games. Add anything you already know you do not want, by name.
    5. In the same place, check Allow sensitive issues and turn it off unless you have a reason not to.
    Recommended by age
    Under 7Minimal
    7–11Minimal
    11–12Minimal
    13–15Mild
    16–17Moderate

The four levels are Minimal, Mild, Moderate and Restricted. Restricted is for age-verified adults only and includes strong violence and realistic blood. If your child wants a game the maturity level blocks, they can send you a request and you approve or refuse it from your own dashboard. That is usually a better conversation than loosening the level for everything.

Who holds this: You set this from your own account, and your child cannot change it back.

  5. 5

Control who can talk to them

Most of the real risk on Roblox is contact rather than content, so this is the step worth getting right. It is also the one children argue about hardest, because Roblox is something they play with friends and chat off can mean playing alone. Friends only is usually the setting that holds.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child] → Settings You Manage → Communication

    1. Complete the age check first. Without one there is no chat at any age, and none of these settings appear.
    2. Set Experience chat, which is chat inside a game. Roblox's help pages still call this Game chat.
    3. Set Direct chat, which is one to one inside a game.
    4. Open Chat and party with friends, and set the chat level. Voice lives inside this same screen, so do not close it yet.
    5. Set Gameplay Coordination, which controls Quick Words, the pre-approved phrases children use to coordinate in a game.
    Recommended by age

13–15Friends onlyOnly people already on their friends list can reach them. Strangers cannot.
16–17Friends onlyOnly people already on their friends list can reach them. Strangers cannot.

There is no Everyone option on any chat setting any more. Roblox replaced it with age-based matching: a 5 to 8 year old can only reach under-13s, 9 to 12 only under-16s, 13 to 15 only ages 9 to 17. The bigger catch is that none of these settings reach chat that a game's creator built themselves. Roblox says so twice on its own page. You can switch Roblox chat off and your child can still be talking inside a game.

If someone is being cruel to them

Most Roblox bullying comes from people your child already plays with, so these settings reduce the surface rather than the source. Being shut out of a private server is the version parents hear about most, and none of the chat settings touch it. There is a separate private server control further down this guide, and it does not fix exclusion either.

  6. 6

Deal with voice chat, which is two separate things

This is the one most guides miss, ours included until a reader caught it. There are two voice features with two different off switches, and turning one off does nothing to the other.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child] → Settings You Manage → Communication → Chat and party with friends

    1. Scroll to the Voice Chat with friends section and set it to Trusted friends or No one. This is calling friends on the platform.
    2. Understand the other one: in-experience Voice Chat is an open mic to everyone in the same game. It is off by default for everyone and has to be switched on by the user.
    3. In-experience voice needs the child to be 13 or over and to pass an age check by ID or facial age estimation. A phone number does not count.
    4. Roblox says a parent can turn in-experience voice on for a 13 to 15 year old, but does not publish where that control lives. If you cannot find it, that is why.

16–17Agree it togetherOnly people already on their friends list can reach them. Strangers cannot.

Roblox contradicts itself on whether 9 to 12 year olds can use voice with friends at all. Its parental controls page implies a parent can enable it, and two other official pages say voice is not available under 13. We have written this to the stricter reading. Also worth knowing: all voice is recorded for moderation and you cannot opt out of that, and voice only exists in games whose creator built it in.

Who holds this: Who holds this changes as your child gets older. Pick an age above to see which applies.

  7. 7

Decide who can see and join their private servers

Private servers are where children play with the people they actually know. That makes them the best part of Roblox and also the place where being left out happens.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child] → Settings You Manage → Visibility & private servers

    1. Open Visibility & private servers.
    2. Set who can join their private servers. Connections only is the setting that holds for most children.
    3. Talk about this one rather than only setting it. It is the control most likely to cause an argument, because it is the one that touches their friendships.

This governs who can get into your child's server. It does nothing about your child being kept out of someone else's, which is the version that actually hurts.

Who holds this: You set this from your own account, and your child cannot change it back.

If someone is being cruel to them

Exclusion is the most common form this takes and this setting cannot reach it. What it does do is stop someone your child has never met turning up in a space they believe is private.

  8. 8

Put a ceiling on Robux spending

In-game purchases are designed to be quick and frictionless. A monthly cap turns an expensive surprise into a small one.

Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Spending restrictions

    1. Open Spending restrictions.
    2. Set a monthly spend limit you’re comfortable with.
    3. Turn on transaction notifications so you see purchases as they happen.
    Recommended by age
    Under 7$0, no spending
    7–11$0, no spending
    11–12$0, no spending

Roblox also sends high-spend alerts at $100, $250 and $500.

Who holds this: You set this from your own account, and your child cannot change it back.

  9. 9

Turn off trading and cap Robux transfers

Trading and Robux gifts are how a child gets talked out of something they paid for. The pitch is always the same: send yours first and I will send mine straight back.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child] → Settings You Manage → Trading & inventory

    1. Open Trading & inventory.
    2. Set Trading to friends only, or off. Off is the right answer for most children under 13.
    3. Set Inventory visibility. If nobody can see what your child owns, nobody can target them for it.
    4. Know the transfer limits Roblox applies: sending or receiving Robux needs your approval, and is capped at 500 Robux a day and 1,000 a month.

Those caps are Roblox's, not yours, and they sit on top of any spending limit you set. A spending limit stops your child buying Robux. It does not stop them giving away Robux they already have.

Who holds this: You set this from your own account, and your child cannot change it back.

  10. 10

    Set a daily time limit

Roblox has no natural stopping point. A built-in limit avoids the nightly argument.

Settings → Parental Controls → Screen time → Manage → Screen time limit

    1. Open Screen time, then Manage.
    2. Choose a daily limit.
    3. While you’re here, look at the list of the top games they played this week. It’s a good conversation starter.

  11. 11

Go through the friends list together

Friend lists collect strangers over time. Ten minutes here is worth more than any setting.

Settings → Parental Controls → [your child] → Connections → Manage

    1. Open your child’s friends list.
    2. Ask about anyone you don’t recognize: where did you meet them?
    3. Remove anyone they only know from inside a game.
    4. Use the same screen to block or report anyone who should not be there.

If your child asks to add a trusted friend, you get an email or a pending request and have 24 hours to answer. Miss the window and the request expires on its own, which to a child looks exactly like you said no.

Who holds this: You set this from your own account, and your child cannot change it back.

  12. 12

    Add a device-level backstop

Roblox settings only cover Roblox. A device-level control catches the app they download next.

    1. Set up Screen Time (iPhone/iPad/Mac), Family Link (Android/Chromebook), Microsoft Family Safety (Windows/Xbox), or your console’s parental controls.
    2. Require your approval for new app downloads.

SafeStart has a separate guide for each of these. Pick your device on the home screen.
